Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester: Mahler's Symphony No. 5 at Concertgebouw + 3 course dinner
About the Event
The Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester in the Fifth Symphony of their namesake. The French composer Gautier Capuçon is the sole author of Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto.
Gautier Capuçon
With Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto, Gautier Capuçon follows in the footsteps of the legendary cellist Rostropovich. For him Shostakovich wrote this piece full of muscle balls and emotional charge. Capuçon recently played the work on tour in the United States and received nothing but praise. Today he plays the First Cello Concerto at the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony
The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester honours his name giver in a performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. The composer started this work in a sanatorium, recovering from two operations. He then did most of his work at the lake in the Alps, where he had a 'summer cottage'. Or, a huge villa with a little further in the woods a hut for the real seclusion. Death and life come together in the Fifth Symphony. Sometimes even literally: in the funeral march that passes, local dance music is heard. Conductor Lorenzo Viotti is at the head of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, an absolute breeding ground for European musical talent.
