Gewandhausorchester, Antonello Manacorda: Schönberg, Mozart at Gewandhaus
About the Event
In Leipzig's beloved Gewandhaus, hear the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Antonello Manacorda for a captivating performance of works by Schönberg and Mozart.
Schoenberg's 1st Chamber Symphony is separated by 118 years each from our present and from Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. Schoenberg called himself a pupil of Mozart and gave him the highest rank among his idols, next to Johann Sebastian Bach.
A few weeks after the premiere of the first, Schoenberg tackled the 2nd Chamber Symphony. He did not get far. After emigrating to the United States, he dug out the unfinished script again, completed two movements, and discarded a third.
Mozart's music was quite popular, and even challenging symphonies such as the last two from 1788 soon enjoyed great popularity: 'The classical Mozart Symphony in C major, with the final fugue, is such a declared favorite of local art lovers that we will not withhold it from them for a year. In 1808, it was stated in Leipzig, where Mozart's Jupiter Symphony may have been premiered during his guest performance in 1789.
Practical Information
Due to its history, the Gewandhaus Orchestra stands for civic engagement in a special way. With a view to the challenges of the present and the community‐building, inspiring and transformative potential of music, it has launched a democracy initiative in 2022. On pressing issues of justice, resources, media, institutions, education, identity, resilience and faith, public and cultural figures engage in dialogue with each other, with the audience and with musical performances.
'Resonance' is the motto above the musically inspired, culturally initiated discussion of basic values, understanding of democracy and social togetherness. We invite you to join in the discussion at round tables and to experimentally explore and musically experience political, sociological, acoustic and interpersonal facets of resonance in workshops and performances. Inspired by musical artworks, we open spaces for voices of the present and for ideas that strengthen the common good — in exchange between all those who want to help shape society.
