_Originally from Siberia, violinist Vadim Repin is his generation's prime exponent of the Russian school of playing; David Oistrakh is generally recognized as his model. And it was Oistrakh who inspired both of Shostakovich's violin concertos, the first of which Repin will perform on this February night.__

Gergiev's mini‐cycle of Shostakovich comes to a close with this concert, pairing the concerto with the Symphony No. 11, subtitled 'The Year 1905'.
