Hieratic and perfect, Alicia Alonso drew a line in the water, a before and after in the history of classical Latin American ballet. She contributed to her legend — enhanced by the courage to triumph as a dancer, since she was partially blind at the age of 19 — and fame as an extraordinary trainer of the fabulous dancers of the National Ballet of Cuba (Ballet Nacional de Cuba), which she founded in 1948 and directed until her death in 2019 at the age of 98.
The last generation of Alicia Alonso's brilliant heirs conducts this gala as a tribute and out of gratitude to the absolute Maestra. These extraordinary dancers have come together to interpret capsules of the repertoire — such as Giselle or Carmen, two works forever linked to Alicia Alonso — and weave together a fantastic string of pearls of eternal classical dance. Teatro de la Maestranza had originally planned this gala for the 2019/20 season, to coincide with the centenary of Alicia Alonso's birth. The pandemic made this impossible, but finally the generation that has preserved her style, heritage and signature will dance in her memory.
Under the idea and direction of Mayda Bustamante, director of Crea Dance Foundation and vice president of Fundación Alicia Alonso in Spain, and the artistic direction of Orlando Salgado, solo dancer and partner of Alicia Alonso for more than 20 years, and a 10‐member international troupe, we will experience a dance that is at the same time very beautiful, precise and elegant.
