Flavours of Italy: Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Concert Series

About the Event

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes Silvia Massarelli, at present one of Italy’s foremost conductors, for a musical celebration of her native country.

The programme opens with the work of one of the most popular composers of the 19th century. Semiramide is one of Rossini’s most elaborate overtures, based on themes from the opera proper, an opera which he wrote in just 33 days! Anthony Sydney is a contemporary Italo‐American composer with a growing international reputation. Soloist Lucia Clementi is no newcomer to the MPO, having joined the orchestra in previous seasons.

Maria Zahra, a graduate from the Conservatorio Guiseppe Verdi in Milan, performs Verdi’s Capriccio for bassoon; a rare gem which showcases the virtuosity of the soloist. In conclusion the colourful, spectacular work of Respighi based on the idea of a toyshop in which all the toys come to life after closing time.
