Debussy, Fauré & Vierne: Xavier Phillips & Florent Boffard at Dijon Opera
About the Event
Vierne's sonata for cello and piano, from the heart of a composer who suffered profoundly throughout his life, is at once a cry of pain and a cry of desire: to conquer tragedy in spite of everything. With its formal perfection and burning vehemence, it is a work not easily forgotten.
The exceptional cello sonata of Debussy was among his last. Composed in the throes of illness, Debussy recaptured the richness and simplicity of the French Baroque style of Couperin in this work. Comparatively contemporary in style, the sonata of Fauré is a quiet, sober, and virile work that opens up the unique and intimate universe of this important composer.
Xavier Phillips and Florent Boffard lead us lovingly through these three works of deep longing.
