The story of the two killer ladies Roxie and Velma is based on true events. Court reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins covered the cases of Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan for the Chicago Tribune in the early 1920s. Both cabaret singers had been accused of murdering their spouses and acquitted. Watkins, however, doubted their innocence and wrote a play that was performed on Broadway in 1926 and released as a silent film the following year. The musical Chicago, based on the play, premiered in 1975 and is now one of the most successful Broadway productions of all time.
