Brahms: A German Requiem at Holmens Kirke
About the Event
The Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir has a tradition of performing Johannes Brahms' 'Ein Deutsches Requiem' in a chamber music version for choir, two soloists, and four‐handed piano.
This masterpiece by Brahms is a deeply personal work, likely inspired by the loss of his mother or the death of Robert Schumann.
Comprised of seven movements, 'Ein Deutsches Requiem' is not a typical liturgical piece, but rather a work of general human consolation. The text, taken from Luther's German Bible translation, offers a unique perspective on themes of death and mourning.
Beginning with a prayer for the living rather than the deceased, the choral movements are both poignant and powerful. The soprano and baritone soloists provide commentary and reflective interjections before the work concludes with the Blessing for the Dead.
