Bernstein / Barber / Sostakovic / Tjeknavorian: Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano
About the Event
A program that encapsulates the contrasting influences of the post‐World War II era: the United States and the Soviet Union. Two distinct worldviews and expressions are vividly captured in Shostakovich's music, particularly his Fifth Symphony—a response to the Stalin regime's disapproval of his Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District—and in the works of Bernstein and Barber, who navigated their artistic identities in McCarthyist America. Under the baton of Music Director Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, the program opens with Bernstein's Candide Overture and features Anne Akiko Meyers as the soloist in Barber's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14.
