The libretto of Beethoven's only oratorio, is based on the Gospel According to Matthew. After the Last Supper, Jesus withdraws in private prayer in the olive grove of Gethsemene. The emphasis is on humanity, suffering, and doubts. Beethoven's composition recollects Mozart and Haydn.
