Auditorium di Milano Fondazione Cariplo: Mahler Festival #10

About the Event

Experience the timeless beauty of classical music in an extraordinary performance of masterworks by Gustav Mahler at Milan's awe‐inspiring Auditorium Fondazione Cariplo.

The Seventh Symphony stands out as one of Mahler's most intricate and captivating compositions. The composer himself described working on it 'in an access of fury' during the summer of 1905, secluded from the world. However, Mahler had already outlined the Symphony's structure the previous year, particularly the two Nachtmusiken composed during his stay in Maiernigg. The Scherzo and Finale, though, were crafted and refined until just a few days before the first performance in Prague on September 19, 1908, conducted by Mahler himself.

The Symphony's enchanting highlights lie in its two Nocturnes, which take the form of a tender serenade. According to Alma Mahler, visions of Eichendorff, whispers of fountains, the gentle rustling of woods — the whole world of German Romanticism — seemed to come alive before the composer. Only sporadically interrupted by enigmatic military signals and sudden, haunting calls resembling cries or whispers, these Nocturnes draw the audience deeper into Mahler's mesmerizing musical landscape.
