Amsterdams Bach Consort: Requiem Mozart

About the Event

In 1791, an anonymous patron sent a messenger to Mozart's door with a request for him to compose a requiem. The identity of this patron remained unknown to Mozart, but it was later revealed to be the Austrian Count Franz Walsegg, who wanted to pass off Mozart's work as his own tribute to his deceased wife. However, Mozart's untimely death left the requiem unfinished. Yet, his wife Constanze took it upon herself to ensure its completion, seeking help from various composers. Ultimately, it was Franz Xaver Süßmayr, a student of Mozart, who provided the final touches to the requiem, even assisting Mozart on his deathbed.

While the requiem holds great significance, it is worth noting that it was not Mozart's only project during the last months of his life. He also worked on other notable pieces, such as his popular clarinet concerto, as well as the operas "Die Zauberflöte" and "Clemenza di Tito." The cause of Mozart's death remains a mystery, but what continues to astonish is the sheer amount of beautiful and awe‐inspiring music he composed in such a short life.

The Amsterdam Bach Consort, true to its name, focuses on performing music by Bach. However, their repertoire extends beyond that as they actively merge early music with contemporary compositions. Moreover, they commission new pieces and collaborate with theater and dance companies, creating a fusion of styles and art forms. With Bach acting as the foundation, the Amsterdam Bach Consort serves as a bridge between the worlds of early music and contemporary music, resulting in a unique and compelling musical experience.
