"Agrippina" was Handel's chance to distinguish himself as an opera composer in Italy. Handel used the themes of sexual desire and the greed for power to create a masterpiece. The audience was thrilled and Handel started his world career.
Rome, 54 AD, Agrippa is married to the Roman emperor Claudio. Afer a battle she believes him to be dead and wants her illegtimate son Nero to ascend the throne. Claudio, however, was saved by his officer, Ottone, whom he made his heir to the throne. The situation becomes even more complicated as all three men love the same woman, Poppea. At the end of the story Ottone gets Poppea and Nero ascends the throne.
