About the Event

Delve into an unforgettable evening of music and emotion with Ute Lemper, set to unfold at the illustrious Teatro de la Maestranza.

As far as we know, no totalitarian regime has ever given rise to enduring works of art. If anything, it was in reaction: swimming against the tide, defying the system, creators worked on the edge, facing the abyss. For some, such as Holländer, Weill, or Spoliansky, their artistic conscience drove them into exile. Others, such as the great Viktor Ullmann, were condemned to die in the gas chambers at Auschwitz. Ute Lemper is the finest ambassador for this art form, which the intolerant rulers labeled “degenerate.” This atrocious label encompassed everything that, born in the short‐lived Weimar Republic, served as the soundtrack to a turbulent and culturally exhilarating era.

But the show Weimar Suite goes beyond a specific period, bringing together hybrid musical styles that blur the narrow line between highbrow and popular culture: cabaret songs, street melodies, tango… Such a fusion requires an unclassifiable, extraordinary voice and a stage presence capable of evoking its natural habitat on the theater stage. Only Ute Lemper, alongside the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, can simultaneously embody Marlene Dietrich, Lotte Lenya, and Edith Piaf in this passionate ode to beauty and creative freedom—as essential today as they were yesterday.
