Every summer for the past eleven years, Don José Fernández Torres “Tomatito” has walked into the University of Almería with his guitar to offer a master class. Sonanta consists of three days of reviewing falsetas, vocal accompaniment, and solo guitar. Few spots available, enormous anticipation. Sitting before the maestro are young students who, in many cases, return year after year. At his side is his son, “José del Tomate.” Who would have told his ancestors in the Pescadería neighborhood that the flamenco guitar would one day be a discipline taught at such a prestigious academic institution? Tomatito has played a major role in achieving this public and widespread recognition.

Following the moving tribute he paid to Paco de Lucía in 2024—perhaps his most prominent influence—Tomatito returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza. With him come the past, present, and future of flamenco—a tribute to the legacy he has inherited and a commitment to advancing the art to which he has dedicated his entire life. A natural, organic progression, free of pretense or artifice, that evolves over time and is presented in a new light with every appearance on stage.
