Step into a world of myth and music with Monteverdi's timeless classic, Orfeo performed at the illustrious Teatro de la Maestranza.
The tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the founding myths of our culture. That is why it continues to move us even as the centuries pass. When Claudio Monteverdi, unintentionally (or not entirely), reinvented opera for his patron Vincenzo Gonzaga, he chose a story in which music, love, and death are intertwined in a dramatically relentless way. The composer from Cremona added to the plot a sense of spectacle that all previous attempts in the genre had lacked. Today, just as in the past, *Orfeo* is presented to the audience with the freshness of a world premiere.
This is all the more true when those performing the score carry the Mediterranean in their name and in their intent. Leonardo García‐Alarcón and his musicians bring to the Teatro de la Maestranza an *Orfeo* in chiaroscuro, full of nuances, rich in color, with just the right amount of intensity required by each of the *affetti* sought by the composer—and, of course, splendidly sung. A staged production with nothing to detract from the overflowing drama of early Italian Baroque, recreated by specialists in a repertoire capable of surprising and moving today’s audience, even so long afterward. Even those who think they’ve already seen it all.
