Seville Opera House: Rigoletto
Seville, Teatro de la Maestranza — Sala Principal
About the Event
Experience the dramatic allure of Verdi's iconic opera, 'Rigoletto,' at the exquisite Teatro de la Maestranza.
If anything defines works of art, it is that they always have something new to say. Absent since 2013, *Rigoletto* returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza—one of those operas that single‐handedly define the genre. Perhaps that is why we believe that everything has already been said about the ill‐fated story of the jester and his daughter, who strays from the straight and narrow for love in the libertine court of Mantua. However, Miguel del Arco’s staging opens up new perspectives on Verdi’s work Verdi saw in Victor Hugo’s creation a character worthy of Shakespeare and, as such, destined to be eternal.
The staging brings the father’s possessive love, Gilda’s fatal defiance, and the Duke’s amoral attitude into our own time. The dramatic tension—that fundamental ingredient in any Verdi drama—arises from the friction between the opera we think we know and a society whose codes are familiar to us. A Juan Jesús Rodríguez in top form leads the ill‐fated love triangle, complemented by the splendid voices of Francesco Demuro and Leonor Bonilla in the first cast. A *Rigoletto* that will be the talk of the town.
