About the Event

Dramma giocoso in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte

The Man Unloved by Women

Some experts suggest that Cherubino and Don Giovanni are indeed the same individual. The young page, who charmed every woman in The Marriage of Figaro, returned from warfare changed—corrupted and disillusioned, morphing into the amoral libertine who, according to his servant Leporello, boasted a list of over 1,000 romantic conquests.

Every woman succumbed to his primal allure under the skies of Sevilla. In this city, the teenager discovered his irresistible charm, and it was in Sevilla that the gates of hell opened to avenge the libertine’s audacity. Between these operas, the gentle light of The Marriage of Figaro darkens into the midnight of Don Giovanni, as Sevilla's fragrant patios transform into poisonous graveyards and mausoleums.

Don Juan may be a lamentable man, but as a myth, he is captivating. Though not the first to portray him, Mozart and Da Ponte were instrumental in defining the character. So much so, that all interpretations are compared to the opera that was celebrated in Prague in 1787 and misunderstood by Vienna in 1788 for its moral undertones.

Stage Director Cecilia Ligorio’s vision, acclaimed in Cologne, centers on the elusive identity of a character only defeated by forces from beyond. And by the supreme dignity of the women whom Don Juan mocks in his downfall—women who, despite appearing in his catalog, loved neither the conqueror nor the man.
