The Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana has just celebrated 20 years of striving for excellence. Founded under the best of circumstances, under the auspices of the Palau de les Arts, and guided with a masterful hand by Lorin Maazel, the orchestra has quickly attained the solidity that characterizes the greatest ensembles. Sir Mark Elder, the OCV’s current music director, joins the ranks of prestigious conductors who have contributed to the orchestra’s splendid form.
On the music stands for its performance at the Teatro de la Maestranza lies a trio of scores united by the same origin but set in distinct aesthetic worlds. The brief *Scherzo à la russe* by the American‐born Stravinsky, which transforms the echoes of his homeland into a brilliant circus spectacle—originally written for jazz band and orchestrated by the composer himself in 1945. That same year, Shostakovich disappointed Stalin with a Ninth Symphony that strayed from the postwar epic style, a move that would cost the composer another condemnation for formalism. In the second half, the charm and energy of Tchaikovsky, whom his fellow performers on the program admired as the father of Russian symphonic music. Three works to gauge the maturity of a great orchestra.
