About the Event
Uncompromising Musical Journey
A youth orchestra serves as both a beacon of cultural preservation and a promising glimpse into the future of music. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, the Orquesta Joven de Andalucía (Youth Orchestra of Andalusia) has played a pivotal role in enhancing opportunities for talented Andalusian musicians during their formative years. These young musicians gain invaluable artistic experience through rehearsals and concerts with top‐tier soloists and renowned conductors, such as the distinguished Mexican maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto, at critical stages of their career development.
The Maestranza programme fosters a dialogue between Spanish and Latin American music through two iconic 20th‐century figures, Manuel de Falla and Carlos Chávez, forming a cultural bridge. Fandangos, by Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra, pays homage to Padre Soler, a foundational figure in Hispanic music, and was composed in 2001 for conductor Leonard Slatkin. The cultural synergy continues with Antrópolis, penned by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz in 2018, commissioned by Carlos Miguel Prieto, the programme's conductor. The repertoire also features the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Dimitri Shostakóvich, a challenging masterpiece dedicated to the renowned Mstislav Rostropovich. Columbian cellist Santiago Cañón‐Valencia, known for his remarkable international career, will perform this work, inspiring young Andalusian musicians. The programme culminates with Huapango by Pablo Moncayo, often regarded as Mexico's unofficial anthem, further linking the musical traditions across the Atlantic. Compelling.
