Orchestra Barenboim‐Said Foundation & Thomas Guggeis
Seville, Teatro de la Maestranza — Sala Principal
About the Event
Music in Times of Fury
Music serves as a powerful connector between diverse worlds and cultures. This is embodied by the Barenboim‐Said Foundation, established by the Junta de Andalucía in 2004. The Foundation is renowned for its musical and humanistic educational projects, including the Academia de Estudios Orquestales (Academy of Orchestral Studies). This academy boasts a student body that contributes to a youth orchestra, with visiting faculty instrumentalists from Europe's most prestigious orchestras.
At the helm of this orchestra is maestro Thomas Guggeis, Musical Director of Oper Frankfurt. Just months before his Seville debut, he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic and, having been an assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin Staatsoper, is regarded as a promising young conductor. For his debut at the Maestranza, he will be joined by mezzo‐soprano Corinna Scheurle, who boasts a remarkable international career after winning Munich's Gasteig Musikpreis in 2017. The program features the sensual Scheherazade by Ravel to honor his 150th anniversary, Brahms' demanding Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and finishes with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5—an intense statement against the repression of ideas and a testament to music's liberating power.
