The Orchestra I Virtuosi dell'opera di Roma, comprised of professors from Italy's top conservatories, excels in the interpretation of classical and operatic music. In the 2026 Musical Season, the Orchestra will present 'Vivaldi’s Four Seasons': a series of violin and string concerts, each depicting the scenes of nature inspired by the four seasons. The program is further enhanced by other significant sacred music concerts for strings.

A string quintet and harpsichord ensemble will perform this concert series at the distinguished Basilica of San Nicola in Carcere, a medieval church nestled in the heart of Rome.

The medieval Basilica of San Nicola in Carcere is one of the oldest churches in Rome, dating back to the 6th century. It stands on the site of the ancient Forum Holitorium, on the site of three temples that were converted into prisons during the Middle Ages.
Built in 1128, it was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, as the area was home to a Greek community particularly devoted to the saint. The small square of the Forum Holitorium, with the three temples of Janus, Hope, and Juno Sospita at its center, was used as a market for herbs and vegetables. The church was almost entirely rebuilt in 1599 by the architect Giacomo Della Porta. Further restored and decorated during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX in 1865, it was freed from the adjacent buildings in 1932, thus exposing the remains of the ancient temples.
During the 2026 Musical Season, the Orchestra of I Virtuosi dell'opera di Roma will perform ' Vivaldi's Four Seasons' at the Basilica: four concerts for violin and strings representing the scenes of nature in music, each inspired by each season of the year.
The program is also enriched by other important concerts of sacred music for strings.

Orchestra: I Virtuosi dell'opera di Roma

The Orchestra I Virtuosi dell'opera di Roma was created in 1999 by the cultural association Musica&Musica and it is now recognized as the first example of private concert organization unfunded by public money.

The founding members' goal was to create a musical ensemble prone to perform lyrical opera and for this reason they have selected only the best members of the most prestigious italian conservatories.

From it's inception the ensemble was directed by M° Adriano Melchiorre, a famous international director, the Orchestra gets itself noticed in the main italian and european concerts and festivals.

The Orchestra of I Virtuosi dell'opera di Roma performs its concerts in Rome, the capital of 'bel canto', and offers the possibility to be in contact with lyrical opera and its fascinating culture to thousands of spectators every year which makes it the ambassador of the italian spirit in the world.
