Dresdner Musikfestspiele: Bella Italia — NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra & Alexander Sitkovetsky
Pirna, Stadtkirche St. Marien
About the Event
Based in Dresden's Polish twin city Wrocław, the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra brings a large dose of Mediterranean flair to the Elbe with its concert. The vibrant ensemble and its artistic director, violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, have five works by predominantly Italian composers in their repertoire. As a calling card from their homeland, they will perform a work by Wojciech Kilar, who is best known for his music for Hollywood classics such as “The Pianist” and “Bram Stoker's Dracula.” His 1986 piece “Orawa” is inspired by the folklore of the Polish mountain regions and is minimalist and meditative in form. Giuseppe Verdi's string quartet, premiered in 1873, combines his dramatic theatrical genius with the strict form of the genre in a fascinating way. Niccolò Paganini, on the other hand, caused a sensation with his variations on a theme from Rossini's “Moses in Egypt,” played exclusively on the G string. His famous “Cantabile” in D major and Tchaikovsky's “Souvenir de Florence,” which captures the Italian lightness and dolce vita in an inimitable way, round off this melodious musical journey.
