Valer Sabadus & Pulcinella: Salle Cortot
Paris, Salle Cortot — Main Hall
About the Event
Initiated in Italy by Monteverdi and then his disciples Grandi (his O quai tu pulchra is absolutely indescribable) and Cavalli, a sumptuous baroque bel canto gradually developed, shifting the balance between recitative and melody in favour of the latter. Vocal lines gained ever greater importance and sensuality.
Barbara Strozzi, herself a pupil of Cavalli, provides a superb example of this with her famous Che si può fare, and her contemporary Cesti does the same. Antonio Caldara further accentuates this trend: one example is the famous and moving Pompe inutili. The culmination of this phenomenon is, of course, Handel, who, from his early cantata Dolc'è pur d'amor l'affanno, achieved a miraculous balance. In England, singing flourished just as wonderfully, with Purcell's masterpieces, which are also of absolute perfection.
To do justice to these gems, an exceptional voice combined with subtle musical sensitivity is required: the countertenor Valer Sabadus is the ideal performer.
