About the Event

Penitential music offers particularly rich themes for setting to music: grief, remorse, and supplication to the Lord—these subjects open up depths of spiritual and philosophical meditation, often resonating with the composers’ own concerns. The Renaissance represents, in this field, a true golden age that The Gesualdo Six invites us to discover or rediscover. At the heart of this program are Robert White’s deeply moving *Lamentations of Jeremiah*, with lines as refined as they are desolate, which find a welcome echo in masterpieces by Byrd, Victoria, and Guerrero, not to mention Lotti’s later but no less poignant *Crucifixus*.

It goes without saying that The Gesualdo Six prove themselves worthy heirs to the greatest English polyphonic ensembles, with striking perfection but also that expressive intensity that is uniquely their own.
