Sirba Octet: Salle Gaveau
Paris, Salle Gaveau — Main Hall
About the Event
In Yiddish, “tantz” means, of course, dance: the hora and the sirba sweep us up into a dizzying whirlwind. But while this whirling dimension takes its rightful place in the Sirba Octet’s program, the ensemble—under the guidance of its founder, Richard Schmoucler—also delves into the depths of the soul: Born in the regions of Eastern Europe, these melodies—which seem to spring from the collective memory—plunge us in turn into unbridled joy or deeply moving emotions. Even in the most cheerful pieces, an underlying melancholy lingers, tied to the history of a people who have never ceased to move from one region to another, from one country to another. And then there’s that often poetic, sometimes biting humor that simply reflects life itself!
