About the Event
The 19th century in all its splendour: Brahms’s impressive Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by the young Polish pianist Szymon Nehring, Wagner’s majestic overture, and two gems from the French repertoire.
Brahms began work on his Piano Concerto No. 2 in May 1878 and completed the score in June 1881, whilst on a summer holiday near Vienna. Shortly afterwards, he informed his friend Emma Engelmann that he had ‘written a beautiful and grand piano concerto’ which, ‘in its abundance’, also included a scherzo. Indeed, the work comprises four movements – an unusual feature for a concerto at the time, but perfectly legitimate given that it takes the form of ‘a grand symphony with obbligato piano’. The grandeur of the Overture to Wagner’s *Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg* and two orchestral excerpts from the most famous operas by Thomas and Saint‐Saëns provide a welcome counterpoint to this epic work.
