Pulsations: Paris Opera Ballet
Paris, Palais Garnier
About the Event
Entitled “Pulsations”, this programme evokes both the rhythm of time and the beating heart, mirroring the repetitive music of Max Richter that permeates two pieces in the programme: the brand new creation by Lucinda Childs, icon of post‐modern dance, for the Paris Opera Ballet, 42 years after Premier orage, and Schmetterling (2010) by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot.
In this expressive piece, making its repertoire debut, the butterfly symbolises existence’s transience and the eternal process of transformation following an opening scene that confronts a son with his mother’s death.
Equally poignant is Lamentation (1930), an iconic solo by modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. Seated on a bench, the dancer sculpts space, constrained by a long fabric tube, “a way of suggesting”, said the choreographer, “the tragedy that haunts the body”.
