PRJCT Amsterdam & Maarten Engeltjes: Salle Gaveau
Paris, Salle Gaveau — Main Hall
About the Event
The famous *Stabat Mater*, which Pergolesi completed just before his death, achieved almost universal fame as early as the mid‐18th century. Few works can boast such an exceptional reputation in the history of music. One need only hear the opening duet to understand this enthusiasm: with its highly expressive harmonic friction, it alone would almost have been enough to ensure its composer’s immortality. The score is a masterpiece from start to finish, skillfully balancing a play of contrasts between light and shadow.
In contrast, Vivaldi’s motet *In furore iustissimæ iræ* expresses divine wrath with breathtaking virtuosity. As for the *Nisi Dominus*, though equally pyrotechnic, it nevertheless offers a moment of surreal suspension with the “Cum dederit.”
Unparalleled in this repertoire, Julia Lezhneva joins her voice with that of Maarten Engeltjes for the *Stabat Mater*, accompanied by the PRJCT Amsterdam ensemble, which is led by the countertenor.
