Philippe Mouratoglou & Julien Martineau: Salle Cortot
Paris, Salle Cortot — Main Hall
About the Event
Julien Martineau and Philippe Mouratoglou form an exceptional duo, in which the mandolin and guitar sometimes sound like a single instrument, so fluid and natural are their interplay and tones. They celebrate the richness of the repertoire for mandolin and guitar through works by Italian composers, great South American masters, and even Ludwig van Beethoven. They invite the audience on a spellbinding musical journey.
While it is usually the same handful of “hits” that are highlighted when presenting the classical guitar (the Concierto de Aranjuez, Asturias—which, let’s not forget, is a piece for piano…), the immense richness of its repertoire—which spans more than five centuries of music across the most varied styles—is now well established.
What is less well known is that some of the greatest masterpieces in the catalog were written… for guitar duet! In this format, freed from the constraint of having to handle both melody and accompaniment at the same time, the guitar fully reveals the infinite gradations of nuance and color it is capable of—as illustrated by Rémi Jousselme and Philippe Mouratoglou in Astor Piazzolla’s exhilarating *Tango Suite* and in the sumptuous *Suite Retratos* by the Brazilian composer Radamès Gnattali.
