Paul Figuier & Les Bacchantes: Théâtre Grévin
Paris, Théâtre Grévin — Main Hall
About the Event
Before the advent of lyric tragedy, which it paved the way for, the air de cour embodied all the refinement of the musical practices prized by the French nobility. Its great founders were Antoine Boësset, Pierre Guédron and Étienne Moulinié, with the next generation, that of Bacilly and Lambert, brilliantly claiming their heritage, right up to Charpentier and his Stances du Cid. Entirely focused on good taste, the air de cour required perfect harmony between music and text, while still leaving room for virtuosity, its strophic form allowing performers to embellish each verse with ornamentation that had to be of the utmost elegance.
These are demands that Paul Figuier, one of the most brilliant countertenors of the younger generation, and Ronan Khalil, a refined harpsichordist at the head of the virtuoso instrumentalists of Les Bacchantes, master to perfection.
