About the Event
The reign of Elizabeth I marked a golden age for the arts, particularly for music. The viola da gamba played a central role in this age of divine blessing: an instrument eminently suited to domestic performance and equally cherished in aristocratic circles, it flourished both in solo repertoire and in works featuring the intricate counterpoint inherited from the great English polyphonists. The voice frequently joined the strings to highlight often magnificent texts, with the melancholy typical of a John Dowland or, later, the melodic beauty that was the hallmark of Henry Purcell. But it is also imperative to discover the art of Christopher Simpson, who, with *The Seasons* and *The Months*, offered true philosophical reflections on the passage of time.
