Mendelssohn Concerto for violin No. 2 Op. 64
Symphony No. 3, Op. 56 « Scottish »
In 1797, Cherubini’s Médée was a huge hit in Paris. The overture is characterised by a tumultuous quality and outpourings of passion which made a powerful impression on the first generation of Romantics. Mendelssohn conjures up a similar blend of pathos and heroism in his Symphony No. 3 and his Concerto for Violin. In 1829, he toured the British isles and returned home with the preliminary drafts of his “Scottish” symphony. After a gestation period of over a decade, the work was performed to great acclaim in 1842. Its melancholic aura is suggestive of island mists, pierced at intervals by the strains of a bagpipe tune. Mendelssohn also spent several years working on his concerto. The attention paid to every detail, however small, vindicates its reputation as a masterpiece of the genre. Carolin Widmann is a seasoned performer of this concerto, which she recorded in 2016.
