Orchestre de Chambre de Paris: Bacewitz, Britten, Françaix
Paris, Salle Cortot — Main Hall
About the Event
An incredible program of chamber music works by Bacewitz, Britten and Françaix with soloists of the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris in the prestigious Salle Cortot.
When Mozart wrote his highly successful Quartet for Oboe and Strings in 1781, he was setting a precedent that was not to be followed for a long time but in 1932, Britten chose the same instrument for his Phantasy Op. 2, composed while he was still a student and which closely follows his Sinfonietta. As in Mozart's Quartet, the oboe plays a predominant, almost concertante role. A few years later, Grażyna Bacewicz wrote a Trio for oboe, violin and cello in her characteristic neoclassical style, a work that was an important milestone in her development. Like her, Jean Françaix was trained by Nadia Boulanger, and later developed his own quartet, which he intended for the English horn (an oboe a fifth lower). His music is sophisticated, oscillating between lightness and expressiveness.
