Nuit sans aube: Opéra Comique
Paris, Opéra Comique — Salle Favart
About the Event
Once upon a time, there was a young man named Peter who was tormented by an indescribable anguish. His mother, steeped in superstition, raised him in a ritualized but indecipherable world. Peter found no comfort in his friend Clara. Perhaps the spirits of the forest and the night would bring him relief…
Inspired by a romantic tale by Wilhelm Hauff chosen by Matthias Pintscher, the libretto by poet and pianist Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg is presented as a fable. Imbued with the mysterious atmosphere of the Black Forest, it unfolds like a dream. Full of suggestion, as only opera can be, it deals with the place of trauma and beliefs in life, and our relationship with nature, between alienation and mysticism.
Composer, conductor, and teacher, musical director of the Ensemble intercontemporain until 2023, Matthias Pintscher is a major figure in contemporary music. Conducting a spellbinding score, he is overseeing the double premiere of his fourth opera, in French at the Opéra‐Comique and in German at the Staatsoper in Berlin, with enchanting staging by James Darrah.
Opera in twelve scenes | French translation by Catherine Fourcassié | World premiere on January 11, 2026, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin under the original title Das kalte Herz | French premiere
