Mozart by candlelight: The Choeur de Paris celebrates its 10th anniversary!

About the Event

Immerse yourself in an extraordinary experience of classical music with an awe‐inspiring performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's masterworks at Paris's stunning Basilique Sainte‐Clotilde.

The Chœur de Paris marks its 10th anniversary with an exceptional candlelit concert dedicated entirely to Mozart. To commemorate this milestone, three emotionally powerful masterpieces are featured: the Mass in C minor, the Clarinet Concerto, and the Requiem—each notable for their emotional depth, incompleteness, and intriguing shared history.

The Mass in C minor, one of Mozart's most poignant compositions, shares a rare dramatic power and fragmented structure with the Requiem. Both remain unfinished. The former, inspired by his deep love for his wife and commenced soon after their marriage, is incomplete—comprising only the Kyrie, Gloria, part of the Credo, the Sanctus, and the Benedictus. Free of ecclesiastical constraints, it captivates with its freedom and profundity.

While the Mass was his concluding mass, the Requiem stands as his final masterpiece, crafted amidst illness, weakness, and financial strain. Anonymously commissioned, this work arrived at an opportune moment, yet Mozart first needed to complete other endeavors, including the Clarinet Concerto.

This concerto, composed for a clarinetist friend, is beautifully moving. 'You cannot imagine the beauty of the sound of the clarinet,' Mozart noted to his father in 1778. The Adagio is particularly expressive, with the clarinet assuming an almost vocal quality.

This exceptional concert will be held in the Basilica of Sainte‐Clotilde, illuminated by the gentle glow of countless real candles. The staging, crafted by Sacrée Musique, accentuates both the venue and the compositions. A remarkable ensemble, an enchanting atmosphere, an unforgettable evening.

The concert was excellent with the clarinetist being the highlight of the evening. It was well worth paying for the seats at the front of the venue — you felt embraced by the choir, soloists and orchestra.
