About the Event
The concert opens with an excerpt from Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Two Violins, placing this program under the patronage of the great violinist, who also served as concert director for the Libre Esthétique. The spirit of this Belgian avant‐garde society inspires the program’s overarching themes: contemporaneity, a broad cultural horizon, and resonances between aesthetic traditions. African‐American composer Jessie Montgomery, whose work explores classical music, jazz, the blues, and African‐American traditions, composed *Strum* (“to strum”) in 2006. Built on layers of pizzicato ostinatos, this piece evolves from a choreographed trance into an ecstatic celebration. The extreme agitation of Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 echoes this. This Romantic quartet, one of the composer’s most dramatic works, reveals the emotional state he was in following the death of his beloved sister Fanny.
