About the Event

Two days after her performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Carolin Widmann reunites with five musicians from the Paris Chamber Orchestra for a concert dedicated to the string sextet. This “incredibly difficult” genre, requiring “six independent yet homogeneous voices” (according to Tchaikovsky), reveals its darker side with Schulhoff’s Sextet. This composer, who remains far too little known—the Nazi regime having permanently erased him from memory—was part of the musical avant‐garde of the interwar period. Schoenberg’s influence is evident in this hallucinatory score, which constantly hovers on the fringes of tonality.
Tchaikovsky’s sextet *Souvenir de Florence* returns to a sense of light. After a first movement of prodigious vehemence, the reference to Italy—evident in the sun‐drenched serenade of the second movement—gives way to spirited melodies inspired by Russian folklore.
