About the Event

The St Matthew Passion, the other major sacred work by Bach after the St John Passion.

In the interval between the two works, Bach focused on developing his musical experience and brought a number of innovations to his writing. He increased the breadth of the sound as far as possible by adding a third choir and made the recitative more varied. This masterpiece marked the end of a long series of Passions in the history of music. With a few rare exceptions, all later works were not Passions in the liturgical sense as understood by Bach, but paved the way for the oratorio form.
