About the Event

At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, European musical life was shaped by a constant interplay of influences among countries. Italy played a central role: as the birthplace of the trio sonata and the concertante style, spurred on by pioneers such as Corelli, it established a model of balance and clarity. These innovations spread widely, influencing England (one might think of Matteis, an Italian violinist based in London) and the German‐speaking regions (with figures such as Georg Muffat and Johann Joseph Fux). Vivaldi, Caldara, and Porpora embraced them, adding a new level of virtuosity and melodic expressiveness, further enriched by the development of the operatic repertoire. Italian opera, too, would go on to triumph throughout Europe: under Handel, it adapted brilliantly to the tastes of London audiences. Accompanying Mathilde Ortscheidt’s rich voice, the four instrumentalists of The BanXhies bring all the vitality of this repertoire to life.
