About the Event

Les Siècles, Maxim Emelyanychev and the violin of Patricia Kopatchinskaja venture into Slavic territory.

This programme needs no further justification than the pleasure of listening to two of the finest works in Tchaikovsky’s repertoire for orchestra. The luminous Concerto for Violin, which is both spirited and nostalgic, is now the most popular and frequently performed concerto in the world. An orchestral introduction paves the way for the violin entry. After a soaring passage in the upper register that sounds almost like an improvisation, it descends to the lower register to intone the famous main theme of the first movement. Symphony No. 6, the “Pathétique”, needs no introduction, and is equally famous for its melancholic waltz and frenzied march, culminating masterfully in the manner of a silent requiem.
