About the Event
Under Louis XIV, the air de cour embodied the good taste and refinement of the French nobility. Marc‐Antoine Charpentier, the great master of this era, left us pieces of rare finesse and grace, often celebrating love and nature. The balance between text and music reveals true craftsmanship, with each word having its rightful place and musical colouring. Certain airs have earned their rightful place in the programmes of our concert halls: Sans frayeur dans ces bois with its irresistible chaconne, the sombre and eloquent Tristes déserts, the Stances du Cid with its poignant melodic beauty, the melancholic Ah Laissez‐moi rêver and finally the sparkling Auprès du feu l’on fait l’amour.
It was up to the performers to embellish the verses with sometimes highly virtuosic ornamentation, which the singers gathered here accomplish with talent. All renowned soloists, they have each contributed in their own way to the triumph of early music repertoires in our time and bring courtly airs back to life with the exquisite elegance that is required. At their side, Stéphane Fuget conducts his ensemble Les Épopées with energy and inventiveness.
