Le Temps Retrouvé: Salon Volkonskaïa in Conservatoire Rachmaninoff
Paris, Conservatoire Rachmaninoff
About the Event
Step into Princess Zinaida Volkonskaya's salon, a musical and literary hotspot, brought back to life in Paris.
Recreating the elegant atmosphere of the salon of Princess Zinaida Volkonskaya (Wolkonsky) (1789–1862)—composer, singer, patron of the arts, and major intellectual figure in Moscow in the 1820s—is the theme of this evening.
A center of cultural life and close to many writers and musicians, Volkonskaya brought together new music, poetry, lyrical projects among friends, and creations by composers who are little known today in her salon.
This program brings together the composers she loved, from Alyabiev, Genishta, and Glinka to Donizetti and Liszt, to offer a lively, intimate, and sensitive portrait of an exceptional woman who brought pre‐Romantic Russia to prominence and whose salon uniquely combined music, poetry, and inspired conversation with grace.
The program will be conducted and narrated in French by Philip Bullock, professor at Oxford University and former Fellow of the University of Grenoble Alpes, and a 3D version of Volkonskaya's salon will be presented during the evening.
