Lang Lang Opens the Orchestre de Paris Season

About the Event

Paavo Järvi opens his third season at the Orchestre de Paris, putting the French canon in the spotlight, followed by the grand symphonic repetoire with a focus on Russian works.

The work of Francis Poulenc will be celebrated this season to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his passing. He remains one of the most singular figures of his generation… extraordinarily humane and with a surprising and electrifying liberty of thought and expression. His first religious work was "Litanies à la Vierge noire," and it is his "Stabat Mater" that will open this year's season.

In the second half of this first concert of 2012/13 season, Lang Lang will interpret the most elegant, supple, and fluid of Prokofiev's concertos — Concerto No. 3. Prokofiev was a legendary pianist in the 1920's with an unparalleled mastery of technique, an unassailable rhythmic execution, and an astonishingly powerful sound.

If the modern piano concerto is Apollonian or Ravelian, "L'Oiseua de feu" is absolutely tribal. It was the first of Stravinsky's work commissioned by Diaghilev for the Paris Russian ballets. A piece that reaches into other realms, it also introduces "Le Sacre du Printemps" which Paavo Järvi will direct with the Orchestra de Paris for the first time in November.
