About the Event

At the invitation of the Paris Opera, the Tokyo Ballet, founded in 1964, will perform Kaguyahime for the first time at the Palais Garnier, to the sparkling music of Claude Debussy, which delicately complements the poetry of the legend.

In Japan, an old man discovers, inside a bamboo shoot, a child no bigger than a thumb, who later blossoms into a woman of dazzling beauty. Nicknamed Kaguyahime (princess of light), she is courted by many suitors, including the Emperor of Japan. But having come from the moon, she is only a fleeting presence on Earth.

In 2023, inspired by one of the oldest Japanese literary tales, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, written in the 10th century, choreographer Jo Kanamori created a three‐act ballet that follows the rhythm of the seasons, in magical scenes highlighted by subtle lighting effects.
