Il Tamerlano: Théâtre des Champs‐Elysées
Paris, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées — Main Hall
About the Event
Vivaldi’s version of the story of Prince Tamerlano embodied by Carlo Vistoli.
A rare work by Vivaldi with a very clear plotline set in the closed world of a 15th‐century palace where the terrifying Prince Tamerlano is holding the Ottoman sultan Bajazet and his daughter Asteria prisoner. But Tamerlano falls in love with his captive. Tamerlano is a pasticcio in which several recitatives and arias are borrowed not only from his previous operas, but also from those of fellow Neapolitan composers Hasse, Giacomelli, and Broschi. The music takes the form of multiple variations illustrating clashes, betrayals, humiliations, and violent death. This whole world of emotions provides scope for hugely impressive vocal expression ranging from rage to suffering.
