About the Event
Haydn and Mozart held a mutual admiration for one another, which found its fullest expression in their string quartets of the 1780s. Their first meeting likely took place in 1781, while Haydn was working on his six Quartets, Op. 33. A fresh spirit emanates from this perfectly balanced cycle: ideas abound, the style comes into its own, and the scherzo replaces the usual minuet. The Quartets, Op. 33, mark a significant milestone in the development of the modern string quartet. In Vienna, Mozart performed them on the viola and grasped their full visionary scope. Inspired by Haydn’s ideas, he in turn composed the six string quartets, Op. 10, the first of which bears the revealing title “Spring.” He dedicated them to his elder colleague and asked him to treat them as his sons, to “welcome them with kindness and be their father, their guide, and their friend!” A side‐by‐side comparison of two quartets from these masterful opuses offers a glimpse into this fruitful friendship.
