About the Event

The iconic Romantic work in Gounod’s version.

It took Gounod almost twenty years to compose Faust, as he constantly revised his work. The musician was 20 years old when he discovered Goethe’s text, and like all the young Romantics of the era, he was fascinated by the story. Here, Gounod steps back from the conventions of French grand opera. The tragedy becomes more intimate, the vocal virtuosity is more supple and is supported by expressive orchestration. Debussy believed that Gounod’s art “represented a moment of French sensibility. It is beauty in all its power, which explodes at just the right moment with fatal and secret strength.”
