About the Event
In the early 1830s, Robert Schumann fell madly in love with Clara Wieck, a pianist and composer. The couple encouraged one another: Robert wove messages of love into his works, while Clara composed variations on her husband’s themes, such as those in Opus 20, performed here in a version for string quartet. The couple counted the composer Mendelssohn among their close friends. Schumann admired the clarity and balance of Mendelssohn’s musical language, while Mendelssohn was struck by his friend’s originality and emotional depth. This mutual esteem spurred their respective creative output. It was in response to the profound impression made by Mendelssohn’s Quartets, Op. 44, that Schumann wrote his Quartets, Op. 41, dedicated to his friend. The quartets performed here (the first ones in each cycle) were Mendelssohn’s favorites.
