Exceptional Concert : When Sacred Meets Jazz
Paris, Eglise Saint‐Louis‐en‐l'Île — Main Hall
About the Event
An Extraordinary Evening of Passion, Faith, and Emotion
Experience an unforgettable musical journey where traditions meet, cultures intertwine, and music transcends all boundaries.
The evening opens with Martín Palmeri's Misa Tango, one of the most celebrated choral works of the contemporary repertoire. This remarkable setting of the Latin Mass brings together the spiritual intensity of the sacred liturgy and the irresistible passion of the Argentine tango. Inspired by the vibrant spirit of Buenos Aires, Palmeri creates a unique sound world in which choir, soloists, orchestra, and the expressive voice of the bandoneon weave together moments of quiet contemplation, lyrical tenderness, rhythmic vitality, and breathtaking virtuosity. The result is a deeply moving work of striking originality and emotional power.
The second half of the programme is devoted to George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, the groundbreaking masterpiece that forever transformed American music. Blending opera, jazz, blues, spirituals, and symphonic writing into a seamless whole, Gershwin created a work of extraordinary humanity, exploring themes of love, hope, resilience, and the enduring strength of community. Its timeless songs—including Summertime, Bess, You Is My Woman Now, and It Ain't Necessarily So—have become enduring classics, beloved by audiences around the world.
Bringing these two landmark works to life are prize‐winning artists from the Les Voix des Outre‐mer competition. Recognised for revealing outstanding vocal talent from France's overseas territories, the competition celebrates a new generation of exceptional singers whose artistry, musical excellence, and captivating stage presence are enriching today's international operatic scene.
A celebration of artistic excellence, cultural dialogue, and musical universality, this exceptional concert invites audiences to discover two masterpieces that speak to the heart across continents and generations.
